HISTORY

Ripponlea Primary School (established 1922) is situated in a well-established South-Eastern suburb of Melbourne in Carrington Grove, East St. Kilda. A special feature of Ripponlea is the on-site preschool, which facilitates and promotes a smooth transition for students from preschool to school. A major Department of Education upgrade was completed in 1996, which has further enhanced the physical environment of the school. Parents continue to maintain and develop our school playgrounds.

Ripponlea draws its population from a variety of cultures and is committed to access and equity for all students. With a population of 230 children, the school is committed to fostering a strong sense of community and an attitude of curiosity and inquiry among its students. The school encourages students to treat parents and members of the wider community with respect and tolerance. Ripponlea’s staff strive to ensure that the school is a safe, secure and happy environment for all students.

Parents are encouraged to participate in school activities such as Parents’ Association, uniform Shop, Canteen, classroom support programs and School Council. Parents are made to feel welcome as an integral part of our school.

Various sporting and play areas include a grassy oval, a separate basketball/netball court, volleyball court and cricket pitch.

SCHOOL CHARTER

The School Charter 1999 – 2001 is the governing document guiding planning, decision-making and resource allocation for the next three years. The major components of the charter have been developed reflecting both the needs of the local community and Department of Education Employment & Training priorities and policy.

Ripponlea Primary School has identified the Charter Priority areas in:

  • Teaching & Learning

  • Information Communication Technology

While maintaining and expanding implementation of the Curriculum and Standards Framework

LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES

Implementing and managing learning technologies so that they will be efficient and effective in their purpose, requires detailed planning, leadership and a co-ordinated effort. Effective integration of learning technologies requires a school to develop three key elements:

  • A shared understanding of teaching and learning.

  • A comprehensive learning technologies plan.

  • Re-engineering of teaching, learning and of school administration processes.

The Learning Technologies Sub-Committee have created a plan which is to be implemented over the next three-year charter period. Many key aspects of this plan have already been undertaken.

  • A successful application for D.O.E funding in the “3 for 1” scheme

  • All computers, both in classroom and the resource centre, are networked to allow for LAN – e-mail/intranet and Internet facilities and access to library catalogue and shared CD-ROM access throughout the school’s information system.

  • Upgrades on the 6 senior classroom computers.

  • Successful applications from the “Surplus Computers for School Project” which produced 12 computers for the junior classrooms and 4 laser printers.

  • CD-ROMs for the junior classroom computers.

  • Establishment of an Information Technology Resource Centre, incorporating both the library and computer laboratory.

  • Staff have undertaken group and individual professional development activities in the Learning Technologies area.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

The group consists of class elected representatives from each of grades 3,4,5 and 6 (one girl and one boy).

The Student Representative Council provides opportunities for students to develop leadership skills. Members are introduced to practices and systems which enable them to be responsible for making decisions about relevant issues which affect themselves and their environment. A Student Representative Council gives students from different levels a chance to exchange ideas and to work together as a team.

HOUSE SYSTEM

The school has four houses named after local streets. Each House chooses a girl and boy captain. Throughout the year, captains help with a variety of functions and they encourage their team members to work well in all areas of school life.

The houses are:

Furneaux (Blue)

Orrong (Red)

Carrington (Yellow)

Loch (Green)
