Learning Programs - Curriculum

Ripponlea Primary School offers students a rich academic environment for their primary school years. We empower each student with an understanding of their own strengths and skills and help them develop strategies that maximise their success. This includes teaching students to understand how they learn, take personal responsibility for their learning, self-reflect for improvement and set goals to maximise their learning outcomes.

Teachers provide a stimulating, comprehensive and challenging curriculum based on the Victorian CurriculumThe Victorian Curriculum F–10 sets out what every student should learn during their first eleven years of schooling. The curriculum is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship. The Victorian Curriculum F–10 incorporates the Australian Curriculum and reflects Victorian priorities and standards.

Student skills and attitudes are further developed through relevant, challenging and engaging inquiry into global concepts and real-world questions. Inquiry Learning enables students to develop an understanding of 'big picture' concepts by questioning, researching, analysing, presenting and sharing their learning. Students are encouraged to be critical and reflective thinkers, connecting their knowledge and experience to develop relevance and personal meaning of the ideas under inquiry.

Literacy and Numeracy receive the greatest time allocation within the school week. Specialist and class teachers work together to ensure students understand the connection between specialist subjects and other areas of the curriculum.

Specialist classes are provided in the areas of:

  • Visual Arts
  • Performing Arts/Music
  • Language Other Than English (LOTE– Italian
  • Physical Education

There is a strong emphasis on shared planning and teachers work in teams to deliver programs that take each student’s academic learning forward from their point of need. To assist students understand the purpose and expectations of the activities provided, teachers use common vocabulary to explicitly inform them of the learning intentions and success criteria.

Ripponlea enriches our student’s education through excursions, incursions and special event days that are designed to stimulate, motivate and engage each child in their learning; to help them understand how the wider community can broaden their inquiry; and to develop their social skills.
