How Ripponlea Primary School Assesses Student Learning
At Ripponlea Primary School, we believe that assessment is key to understanding each student's learning journey and ensuring they reach their full potential. We use a variety of assessment methods to provide a well-rounded picture of student progress, which helps us guide their learning and offer the right support when needed.
Ongoing Assessment:
Assessment at RPS is continuous and happens throughout the school year. Teachers regularly observe and track students' skills, knowledge, and understanding in day-to-day classroom activities. This allows them to make informed decisions about the best ways to support each student’s learning. These observations are built into regular class activities and interactions, making it an integral part of our teaching approach.
Formative Assessments:
Formative assessments are used to monitor student progress and inform teaching. This includes quizzes, projects, assignments, and in-class discussions. These assessments provide valuable feedback to students, helping them understand their strengths and areas for improvement. Teachers also use these assessments to adjust their teaching strategies to meet the needs of all students.
Standardized Testing:
We use NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) in Year 3 and Year 5 to assess how well students are performing in key areas like reading, writing, and mathematics. This gives us an understanding of how our students compare to others nationally and allows us to identify areas for improvement in our teaching practices.
Learning Goals and Feedback:
Each student sets personal learning goals with the help of their teachers. These goals are focused on areas where they need growth and are revisited throughout the year. Students receive regular feedback on their work, which is aimed at helping them understand what they’ve done well and what they can work on next.
Reporting to Families:
We believe in keeping families informed about their child's progress. Formal reports are provided at the end of each semester, and we also offer parent-teacher interviews to discuss how students are tracking. These reports and conversations help build a strong partnership between home and school, ensuring that parents have a clear understanding of their child’s achievements and areas for growth.
At Ripponlea Primary, assessment isn’t just about grades – it’s about understanding each child’s learning journey and supporting them to grow as confident, capable learners. We value the role that families play in supporting this process and encourage open communication to ensure every student’s success.
