Meet Lola - Our Therapy Dog

At Ripponlea Primary School, we are lucky to have our very own special therapy dog, Lola. Lola plays a crucial role in supporting students across many aspects of their school life. She helps build confidence in students, whether it’s through reading or maths, by offering a calming presence during challenging tasks.

Lola also assists students with coping strategies, providing emotional support to help them regulate their feelings and manage stress. Her gentle nature and training ensure that she’s able to support students in a variety of ways, from being a comforting companion to encouraging students to push through academic challenges.

Lola was officially trained by Tessa Stowe from K9 Therapy Dogs, and her presence has truly made a positive impact on the school community.

Why a Therapy Dog?

We are often asked about the benefits of having a therapy dog in a school setting. Here’s what we share with families:

“Studies have shown that therapy dogs make a big impact in terms of social-emotional learning.”

There is a growing body of research into the positive effects of therapy dogs in schools, and the benefits are wide-ranging:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Increased school attendance

  • Improved confidence and self-esteem

  • Enhanced learning outcomes, including boosts in reading and writing levels

  • Improved motivation and positive attitudes toward learning

  • Stronger relationships with peers and teachers

  • Better social and emotional skills

Therapy dogs like Lola help reduce the stress chemical cortisol in the brain, while triggering the release of oxytocin, the hormone responsible for feelings of connection and bonding. The result? A calmer, more connected, and focused learning environment.

What Does Lola Do?

Lola participates in a range of school-based activities designed to support student wellbeing:

  • Visiting classrooms and spending time with small groups or individuals

  • Helping students regulate their emotions through calm companionship

  • Listening to students read – a non-judgemental audience who boosts confidence!

  • Assisting with transitions or times of heightened anxiety

  • Providing comfort and reassurance during challenging moments

  • Helping students at recess and lunch play

Her presence alone is often enough to lift spirits and bring smiles to many faces throughout the school day.

A Valuable Member of Our School

Lola is not just a visitor – she’s part of the Ripponlea community. Her work supports our whole-school approach to wellbeing, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), and student engagement.

We are proud to lead the way in recognising the value animals like Lola bring to the education and development of children.
